Steampunk is a phenomenon that has developed into a cultural movement, a style and a subculture. In the craft sector, used materials are combined with modern and futuristic technical functions, creating a distinct retro look to the technology. Steampunk art emphasises "visibility" and is thus considered abstract expressionism. While modern objects have a cool, smooth surface that reveals nothing of the processes inside, steampunk highlights pistons, bolts and gears.
One of the most famous exponents of steampunk is Charles Morgan (1951). A jeweller by trade, he quickly gained a reputation for creating extraordinary jewellery. Rings with secret compartments, pendants that can be opened in twelve different ways, electronically controlled luminous jewellery, gold- and silver-plated lighters and movable sculptures in all sizes were created. Charles Morgan reveals the beauty of mechanical movements. His "machines" - mobile, humorous and metallic sculptures never cease to amaze. All the objects he creates are unique and therefore one-of-a-kind, which cannot be found a second time.
Today, his works are traded by collectors in the big auction houses and find their place in various museums...
