Biedermeier Garnet Medallion in Tombak
The name garnet was first coined in the Middle Ages, but has its origin in the Latin word 'granum' for grain or seed and refers to the occurrence of the mineral in grains that bear resemblance to the seeds of the pomegranate. These are found in the orange-red to red-violet colours of the flower, fruit and seeds of the pomegranate.
This particular piece is a locket that opens at the back. It even still has the original picture of the sweetheart. At the same time, the piece of jewellery can also be worn as a brooch. The curved surface is studded all over with garnet stones, all of which have been cut and set by hand in various sizes. The setting is made of tombac. Made around 1830, the piece is in very good, collectible condition. Without chain.
