Question about item

Shagreen is a type of rawhide, historically from the back of a horse, or from sharks or rays. Shagreen is sometimes used as a fancy leather for book covers, pocket books and small cases. There was a definite resurgence of the items in the 1920s and 1930s, the sleek, hard finish and traditional pale green tone fitting very well with the prevailing Art Deco style.

Art Deco make-up box (minaudière) in sterling silver 925/-. The hinged lid has been set with dyed pale green shagreen and a cut medallion in jade. The underside is completely and the faces partially covered with black enamel. The silver body was engraved by hand. The gilded interior consists of a mirror, a container with lid for powder, a container with lid for cream and a lipstick holder. The minaudière is fully stamped with import marks from London for 1931, together with the Stockwell and Co mark (he was the official importer of Georg Jensen in the UK). Condition overall very good, there are small chips in the enamel on one face (see photo). Museal and collectible!
