Antique 750 gold medallion necklace with enamelled portrait - circa 1860/70
This extraordinary medallion necklace in bright yellow gold epitomises the elegance and spirit of optimism of the 1860s/70s - a time of stylistic change between Biedermeier and the approaching historicism.
At the centre is a finely painted enamel portrait of a lady with curly, flower-adorned hair and a pearl necklace - a symbol of the new feminine lightness of the era. The depiction bears witness to a fascinating symbolic language: floral ornaments, a relaxed hairstyle and relaxed clothing as an expression of individuality and renewal.
The slightly egg-shaped medallion is set in an escutcheon-shaped frame made of guaranteed yellow gold of at least 750 - partially matt, partially polished, with a fine engraved pattern on the edge. The medallion is crowned by a symmetrical spike wreath with a pearl mounted in the centre and gold ribbon bows as a decorative finish.
The reverse surprises with a faceted glass plate in the shape of a coat of arms, under which is a lovingly tied lock of hair on a red velvet background - an intimate and touching memento detail.
The medallion hangs from a strong, wide Venetian chain with a cylindrical clasp. Despite its age, the condition of this piece is museum-quality and in excellent condition. The gold content has been tested and guaranteed.
A magnificent collector's item with soul - ornate, historically significant and deeply symbolic. Ideal for lovers of antique jewellery with history.
