Antique pendant in alloyed platinum with diamonds and citrine
Mary is "Our Lady of the Sign" who conceives and gives birth to the Son awaited by humanity to bring salvation to all peoples. Our Lady of the Sign found a special devotion in the Russian Church. Byzantine missionaries brought her to Russia, where she was kept and venerated in the Transfiguration Church in Novgorod.
Imposing pendant set with a rectangular, facet-cut golden yellow citrine, within which is a detailed cut depicting the Mother of God of the Sign. To the right and left of the head of the Virgin Mary are the letters ΜΡ ΘΥ (short for ΜΗΤΗΡ ΘΕΟΥ, "Mother of God"). The stone is held in a basket-like setting of alloyed platinum, richly decorated with 53 diamond roses. Unmarked, the jewellery indicates a Greek - Orthodox origin around 1850.
