The signet ring was originally used to seal documents. Liquid wax had to be dripped onto the documents to be sealed and the seal ring pressed into the still soft wax. The sealing plate can consist of precious metal (silver, gold) or semi-precious stones such as carnelian or layered onyx.
Beautifully decorated antique signet ring in a small size. Vertical rectangular sealing plate made of red carnelian with cut corners. The stepped frame of the carnelian is held on the side by wide, richly engraved elements that merge into the straight ring band. Master's mark illegible, manufactured around 1900.
