Antique garnet medallion or brooch in tombac
Tombac is a high copper brass alloy with a minimum of 72% copper and a maximum of 28% zinc. The greater the proportion of zinc, the harder the alloys become. Their colour also becomes lighter and shifts from red to golden yellow to light yellow to silver. If tombac occurs in its silver variant, it is also called "white tombac" or "nickel silver".
Opulent medallion in tombac with faceted, dark red garnet stones in knob settings. Multi-level, star-shaped structure with countless bohemian garnet stones. The medallion can be opened, the back is closed with a set glass pane. Additional pin clasp, so that the locket can also be worn as a brooch. Incl. a long chain. Made around 1860/70. Condition according to age very good with patina. All stones present.
