In antiquity and also in the Middle Ages, onyx was said to have magical properties and was therefore often made into amulets and healing stones. The stone, which occurs in white and black layers, was also often used for gemstones.
Beautiful Art Deco bracelet with onyx and marcasites. The bracelet consists of alternating rectangular and square links. The squares are set with black onyx in a lobed setting and are decorated with a marcasite in the middle. The rectangular elements have been decorated with an abstract openwork snake design, and flanked by bars set with marcasites. Box clasp with safety chain. Maker unknown. Excellent condition.
