Enamelled Tobacco Box in Silver around 1880
Absolutely unique tabatiere circa 1880. Body of solid silver in min. 800/- with elaborately engraved rims, fire gilding on the inside. Surface decorated with enamel painting that deceptively copies the stone surface of a malachite. The curved surface of the back fits like a flatterer to the wearer's trouser pocket (pocket flatterer). The clasp of the hinged lid is held by a semicircular turquoise in a cabochon. The work is strongly reminiscent of the "Rostov Finift" of the late 19th century. Excellent condition, worthy of collecting, museum quality. Unmarked, probably Russia.
